Many dimensions of Maihama

The Maihama route, from Jitensha Sanpo, covers 30 kilometers of riversides, ocean views and resort areas in a well-mapped compact three hour ride. This is one of my favorite routes around Tokyo because in a short span you get a good lay of the land. I will present the ride in the opposite direction from the Jitensha Sanpo map and will begin from the turnoff for Mizumoto Koen on the Edo river cycling road.

Head up to the riverside from Mizumoto Koen and turn right and continue through Shibamata. At the Keisei Line veer left and pass the baseball fields. After passing the route 14 bridge you will head through Pony Land. Soon you will see a large distinct bridge. At that traffic light turn left and cross on over to Chiba Prefecture. Soon after you will pass through the Gyotoku行徳 Bridge traffic light. This is where the main ride begins.

Along this part of the Edo River there are lots of boat rentals and fishermen.

Turn right at Ichikawa Ohashi and stay to the right side of the bridge. There is almost no traffic on this road. At the dead end turn right onto Gardena Avenue. The road is lined with lamp posts festooned with rusty anchors.

The road ends.

Turn left when you see a large green mound on your right hand side. That is Gyotoku Fuji. There is a shop at the corner with a yellow sign and black lettering.

Soon you will approach a canal. Veer left onto that side walk. Follow it to the end and then turn right.

Head past Daily Yamazaki and turn left at the next intersection where there is a video store with a yellow sign and blue lettering on the right hand corner.

Turning left, the video store is now behind you.

Take this road to an Elementary school南新浜. Turn right and follow the road around the school. Continue on that road, then cut through the narrow park and turn left.

For a little ways the sidewalk has a designated cycling lane, but as you proceed the sidewalk breaks down a little. After passing route 357 you will be able to glimpse the waterfront as well as the train line. Turn right at the train line and cross over the bridge. Turn left at the Urayasu浦安 police station警察署, which is the big white building on the right.

At the next street, which has a street map for the Irifune入船 area posted on the corner, turn left. This road will take you to the waterfront once more. Hop up on the sidewalk to enjoy the view and proceed to the fenced off area where there is a wide road on your right.

After crossing another bridge you will turn right at the dead end which faces a little park. Follow this road past Sunkus on your left and Y’s Mart on your right. Again this road dead ends, so turn right and proceed past the industrial park area.

After crossing under the train line turn left. Make another left at the next intersection after Cirque du Soleil. On your right is the Disney parking garage. At the next traffic light turn right. Here you will have views of both the bay and Disney Land. Take this road all the way to the Kyu Edo river.

Veer left onto the Kyu Edo cycling road. It will quickly dead end so return to the sidewalk and turn left at the Sunkus. The cycling road is off and on for a long while so it’s best to use the road, which usually isn’t busy.

You’ll be heading straight for a good 20 minutes and then the road ends. Work your way past a set of yellow apartments.  Turn right at the house with a bamboo motif on its outer wall and then left at the yellow house.

Finally turn left on the main road which will take you back to the Edo river cycling road!
